ANTI-OUCH POUCH
Deon Maas created the
Anti-Ouch Pouch while recovering from a mastectomy. Maas
designed the wedge-shaped pillow to ease the painful area
under her arm, replacing the small pillow that she had been
using. The wedge shape gently holds the arm away from the body
while the adjustable strap holds the pillow in place without
having to use sore arm muscles to “clutch” it. An opening in
the pouch also lets the user adjust the amount of fiberfill
for maximum comfort. The Anti-Ouch Pouch not only provided
comfort for Maas, but it also allowed her hands to be free to
pursue the activities she loved, especially sewing.

NATIONAL
SEWING MONTH

Craft Alliance 4/22/08
While many are celebrating fall's cooler
temperatures, the return of children to
school and the impending fruit harvests,
sewers across the country are attending
special events and sharing their passion for
their craft with others for both fun and
charitable causes.
Co-sponsored by the Sewing & Craft Alliance
and the American Sewing Guild, this special
month-long recognition began in 1982 with a
proclamation from then-president Ronald
Reagan. Beginning this year, the event has a
targeted theme of "Go Green! Sew Green!"
which encourages the use of eco-friendly
materials and notions, and a consciousness
about recycling, restyling and repurposing
through the use of sewing skills.
The
www.NationalSewingMonth.org
website launched on April 20, 2008 with the
newly designed Go Green! Sew Green!,
theme and logo,
which reflects the changing way we see our
environment and the knowledge that we can
make a difference, even with our
sewing projects, without sacrificing comfort
or style.
For the first time, National Sewing Month
features a project, the Anti-Ouch Pouch,
which is a wedgeshaped pillow designed for
women to ease the painful area under the arm
after a mastectomy. Developed by Deon Maas,
an ASG member and
Sew
News contributor, the Anti-Ouch Pouch is
ASG’s 2008
National Service Project.
While
September is a time to celebrate our passion
with National Sewing Month, but we know the
creative, therapeutic and calming effects of
sewing are joys that we can celebrate
throughout the entire ye ar.
